「島唄」原意，是指：傳承自琉球一帶的歌謠，以日本傳統樂器三線、太鼓伴奏進行演唱.

據說有三千到四千首之多。其傳唱方式，較之一般的日本流行音樂，就如同台灣的原住民音樂對台灣本土音樂的衝擊和影響，那麼清新與吸引。

日本多位歌手包括元千歲，音樂裡就融入了『島唄』這樣的音樂元素。
